Course Description:

We will examine the area of raster image editing and current electronic darkroom software packages. You will use the digital imaging environment to calibrate scanning processes, manipulate digital camera input including black and white as well as color images. You will also retouch images for advertising as well as work with text and a variety of output devices. Digital color spaces as they relate to various output devices will be covered. For example, calibration for four-color separations and pre-press procedures will be discussed as well as preparing images properly for the web.

Major Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of various imaging programs and perform advanced image manipulation techniques.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to acquire images from a variety of current input sources.
  3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of grayscale, RGB, CMYK, duotone, and Lab color spaces.
  4. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the difference between vector and raster images.
  5. Demonstrate a working knowledge of choosing the correct image resolution for output devices.
  6. Successfully calibrate a monitor
  7. Demonstrate ability to work with various advanced image selection methods
  8. Demonstrate ability to work successfully with channels, layers, and paths.
  9. Successfully export clipping paths for page layout.
  10. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the painting, editing, fill and type tools.
  11. Successfully sharpen images using unsharp masking methods.
  12. Successfully color-correct images using levels, curves and adjustment layers.
  13. Complete successful image manipulation using layer masking and recent composite methods.
  14. Demonstrate a working knowledge of various digital image file formats.
  15. Successfully resize images using correct interpolation methods.

Required Materials:

Reliable means of taking class notes & transferring/backing up class-related data/files. This can be discs, thumb-drives, email, online storage, etc.

Required Tools:

Regular access to a computer with Adobe Photoshop installed.
Regular access to the internet and world-wide-web.

Integrity:

Attendance:

Full attendance is required and consists of being present or excused for the full time allotted for each class session. An attendance sheet will be passed around the class at the beginning of each class to keep record of students' attendance in class. To be excused from missing class, if at all possible, the instructor must be informed in advance of your inability to attend or participate in class due to an emergency, illness or conflict. In all cases, it is your responsibility to contact another student to obtain notes and pertinent material covered in class.

Students counted absent for more than one session will have their final grade for the course lowered by one letter grade for each session for which they are counted absent thereafter. Students counted absent for more than three sessions may be asked to withdraw from the course.

Assignments:

All assignments must be completed and turned in when due. No assignment will be accepted until all previous assignments have been turned in. The final grade for an assignment turned in late will be reduced by at least 10% of the total possible points. The final grade for any studio or critique sessions for which a student is counted absent will be reduced by at least 10% of the total possible points.

Participation:

Proper participation in the course will be characterized by paying attention, being courteous, and making meaningful contributions to classroom dialog. A portion of each student's grade will be based on the instructor's assessment of their participation over the course of the semester.
